Trinidad and Tobago

Top 10 Destinations in Trinidad and Tobago
Trinidad and Tobago

The sun is setting over peaceful bays, Trinidad and Tobago lie in the Caribbean Sea off the northeast coast of Venezuela. Trinidad is mainly flat and rolling with mountains in the north that reach up to a height of Mount Aripo, while Tobago is heavily forested with hardwood trees.
But despite this mountainous and tropical place, Trinidad and Tobago is home to these following outstanding places:

Pirate’s Bay

Pirate’s Bay - yes you heard it right, it is not the site you use to download movies, but the top choice beach in Charlotteville. Past Charlotteville's pier, a dirt track winds up and around the cliff to concrete steps that descend to Pirate’s Bay, offers excellent snorkeling and fantastic beach liming making a day with coolers and games of beach football. There are no facilities, so bring your own drinks and food. If you don't fancy the 10-minute walk, ask one of the Man of War Bay fishermen to transport you there and back. It is one of the best places if you’re up for some adventure.

Asa Wright Nature Centre

Asa Wright Nature Centre is one of the wildlife reserve located in Trinidad. A former cocoa and coffee plantation transformed into an 80-hectare nature reserve, this place blows the minds of birdwatchers. Even if you can’t tell a parrot from a parakeet, it's still worthwhile as you can see a great number of colorful specimens from the veranda viewing gallery, as well as lizards and agouti. Located amid the rainforest of the Northern Range, the center has a lodge catering to birding tour groups and a series of hiking trails.

Nariva Swamp

Nariva Swamp is another wildlife reserve located in the East Coast. Inland of the Cocal, the Ramsar-protected Nariva Swamp covers some 6000 hectares of freshwater wetland inhabited by anaconda snakes and a small population of elusive manatees. To fully appreciate the area's beauty, book a spot on a kayak tour with Paria Springs or Caribbean Discovery Tours, wherein the trip will include a walk into Bush Bush Island to see howler and white capuchin monkeys.

Rio Seco Waterfall

Rio Seco Waterfall is where you can find a majestic waterfall and is located in Northeast Coast. Just past the bridge over the Rio Seco, a signposted trail leads inland to the Rio Seco Waterfall in Matura National Park. This stunning swimming hole and waterfall, with deep clear waters and a gorgeous canopy of rainforest overhead, is a 45-minute hike from the trailhead where the path is signposted, well maintained and easy to follow without a guide. It is a perfect place hikers and adventure seekers.

Queen’s Park Savannah

Queen’s Park Savannah is one of the most popular parks in Port of Spain. Once part of a sugar plantation and formerly home to a racecourse, this public park is encircled by a 3.7km perimeter road that locals call the world’s largest roundabout. In the early evening when the scorching heat subsides, the grassy center is taken up with games of cricket or football, while joggers crowd the perimeter path with vendors selling cold coconut water.

Mt Irvine Beach

Mt Irvine Beach is one of the awesome beach in Leeward Coast. This pretty public beach, located at the north of Mt Irvine Bay Hotel, has sheltered picnic tables and changing rooms plus a beach side restaurant and bar, roti shacks and plenty of shade trees. Surfers migrate here from December to March to ride the renowned waves. You can also rent sun loungers, kayaks and surfboards on the beach. Adventure is definitely found here.

Fort King George

Fort King George is a fort found in Scarborough. Located at the top of a hill at the end of Fort Street, this sizable fort was built by the British between 1777 and 1779, and is a place worth visiting because of its restored colonial-era buildings (one of which holds the Tobago Museum). Benches under an enormous line of samaan trees allow you to gaze out over Rockly Bay, while cannons line the fort’s stone walls, pointing out to sea over palm-covered flatlands below.

National Museum & Art Gallery

National Museum & Art Gallery is a museum located in Port of Spain. Located in a classic colonial building, the dusty historical exhibits range from Amerindian settlers to African slaves and indentured Indians. There are also geological and natural-history displays and the rotating collection of artwork on the top floor is the highlight, where it gives an excellent introduction to the Trinbago art scene.

Emperor Valley Zoo

Emperor Valley Zoo is a small zoo located in the Port of Spain. Just north of Queen’s Park Savannah, the 2.5-hectare Emperor Valley Zoo may be small, but has some interesting residents including indigenous red howler monkeys, ocelots and various birds and snakes native to Trinidad and Tobago. A newly landscaped section holds sea otters, flamingos and a butterfly park, while giraffes, warthogs and Bengal tigers are the newest residents.

Pigeon Point, Tobago

Pigeon Point, Tobago is a heritage park and considered as the most beautiful beach in Tobago. It is home to the world famous thatch-roofed jetty. It has a long stretch of white sand beach and a warm aquamarine water. The place is serene and offers a wide variety of water sports.
